Claus Academy was born out of Barb Schade's longtime passion for teaching and concern for many of her students and tutoring clients who demonstrated difficulty with traditional methods of learning. Few of these students struggled because of learning disabilities or any other clinical conditions. Rather, their schools simply could not interest them or address their particular subject deficiencies. Some exhibited emotional or behavioral problems that caused problems at home and in school. Few made progress in traditional tutoring programs, which tried to apply a standard program to these students' varying needs.

During tutoring sessions as well as in the classroom, Barb has developed an interactive, self-directed program which encourages students to pursue their personal interests while learning. Although her approach is simple, it requires a high sensitivity to individual needs as well as a level of trust that can be found in few facilities. Noting a lack of effective solutions for these students, Barb founded The Claus Academy in 2009 to offer a 21st-century education tailored to each student. Students in Fairfield County now have access to exceptional academic resources in an environment that embraces individuality, choice, and creativity. Regardless of the student's background and desired future, Claus can help.
